Collaborative Injection Drug Users Study III: Drug User Intervention Trial (CIDUS/DUIT)
Funded by: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Project dates: 1999 - 2004
Principal Investigator: Hagan, Holly
PROJECT DESCRIPTION

HIV and hepatitis C are transmitted most commonly among people who inject drugs (PWID) through the sharing of needles and syringes. The project examined a peer education intervention designed to reduce injection and sexual risk behaviors for HIV and HCV infection in young PWID. Session activities included videos, interactive discussions, group exercises, skills building role plays and practice designed to teach and support PWID to become peer educators. This work contributed to our understanding of how to prevent blood-borne viral infections during the first few years after drug users begin to inject.
