BIO
Daniel Karus is the Senior Analyst for the Psychosocial Research Unit on Health, Aging and the Community at NYU.  Early in his career he served as analyst on a series of studies with Dr. Denise Kandel investigating the patterns of adolescent and young adult drug use in a longitudinal study of 1971 NYS high school students.  Later, inspired by the impact of HIV/AIDS on his personal and professional networks, he chose to shift his efforts toward investigation of the physical and psychosocial adjustment/well-being of patients with serious illness – most notably HIV/AIDS and cancer.  As treatments for these conditions have advanced and the demographics of the disease changed the focus of his work, like that of the rest of the field has shifted toward the evaluation of programs and delivery modalities to improve initiation/retention in care, treatment adherence and patient outcomes – both clinical and patient quality of life.  Currently he is co-investigator and lead statistician on a PCORI-funded clinical trial that will inform health policy and services delivery on the feasibility and practice impact of a clinic-based professional education and training initiative to integrate a palliative approach with on-going outpatient HIV care for community populations.
