Latino and African American adolescents remain disproportionately affected by the negative health consequences associated with adolescent sexual risk behavior. Despite the fact that sexual risk behavior involves more than the individual, little research has studied both couple members or used measures from each member of a couple to predict their future sexual activity. This study focused on Latino and African American adolescents in grades 11 and 12 and their parents. The project attempted to identify explanatory models of couple sexual risk behavior. Specifically, it looked at emotions and emotional regulation, and also examined the influence of the pattern of relating, or interactions within their romantic relationships and with their parents. The research will help increase knowledge regarding the influences on adolescent sexual risk behavior. The information will then be used to develop improved relevant interventions to prevent adolescent sexual risk behavior among African American and Latino youth.
