Simulation Modeling to Reduce Drug Overdose Mortality in New York City
Funded by: Commonwealth Fund
Project dates: May 2024 - April 2025
Principal Investigator: Allen, Bennett
PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Overdose mortality remains a leading public health crisis in New York City (NYC) and is a key driver of declining life expectancy and growing racial and ethnic inequities.

In response, NYC has launched HealthyNYC, a visionary agenda to increase life expectancy in NYC to 83 years by 2030.

To inform HealthyNYC’s efforts, this study will:

  1. Develop a novel, simulation model to predict the impact of overdose prevention investments on overall overdose mortality and life expectancy;
  2. Estimate the impact of overdose prevention investments on racial and ethnic disparities in overdose mortality and life expectancy; and
  3. Identify the most cost-effective and equitable allocation of resources to reduce overdose mortality and increase life expectancy.
