Ending HIV and Taming HCV and Overdose Among Puerto Rican PWID in New York City: The Ganchero Intervention
Funded by: National Institute on Drug Abuse
Project dates: June 2023 - April 2026
Principal Investigator: Gelpi-Acosta, Camila
Principal Investigator: Guarino, Honoria
PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The project will develop an innovative and culturally tailored HIV, HCV, and overdose risk-reduction intervention for migrant Puerto Rican people who inject drugs (PWID) in the Bronx, New York City that leverages the key migrant PWID role of the Ganchero, frequently used “injection doctors,” and migrants’ strong social network ties.

The intervention will train Gancheros on foundational HIV, HCV, and overdose knowledge, and subsequently deploy Gancheros to disseminate evidence-based risk-reduction messages and resources and to implement safer injection practices as they deliver their regular services to migrant PWID clients.
